The programs, which exist almost exclusively in the US, aim to address serious disruptive behaviours in school pupils by removing them from their usual surroundings and fostering self-worth and achievement in a safe, secluded environment. Unlike half-way houses or outreach programs in the UK, wilderness therapy centers involve an extended period of basic living, alongside, crucially, trained counsellors and therapists to specifically address the causes of the child?s antisocial behaviour.

An individual typically attends a wilderness center for around 90 days, during which time that person has a great deal of support from staff. Upon leaving the center, the transition for many children back to normal life, where they may return to old habits, old friends and old behaviour, can be a difficult one.

For those families that can afford to, a private tutor provides an effective way to bridge the gap. ?Some youngsters attend a kind of therapeutic boarding school when they leave the wilderness therapy program, but most just get sent home,? says Adam Caller, education specialist and founder of Tutors International. ?Many leave the program keen to straighten out their life, but it?s hard not to fall back into old ways when they get home. Instead of cutting the support dead, wilderness program will advise parents whether a private tutor will be an appropriate way to bridge that support gap.?
